Crowell & Moring attorneys moved this month into the firm's new Manhattan office in Hudson Yards at Two Manhattan West, after years of firm growth in the Big Apple. Crowell has taken over two floors or 71,000 square feet of the 58-story office tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill that offers sweeping views of the Hudson River. The new space is slightly smaller than the 75,000 square feet the firm was occupying at its previous office for the past 15 years at 590 Madison Avenue. However, Glen McGorty, managing partner of Crowell's New York office, said the new office space "is much more efficient" and designed to accommodate more people in a smaller space. The firm has around 150 personnel in Manhattan, including 100 lawyers, after some growth in the past few years. In 2021, Crowell, acting on a long-held desire to expand in New York, combined with financial services boutique Kibbe & Orbe, adding 24 lawyers in three cities. Some of the new Manhattan office design features include a single-size office footprint; no corner attorney offices and communal spaces in their place; sit-and-stand desks; as well as upgraded technology throughout the office, according to McGorty. "We've gone to a [standardized] office layout. This means that offices for partners, associates, and counsel are all designed to be of similar size, including both interior and exterior offices," said McGorty. "All those design choices have made it so that we've been able to really have less square footage." Crowell is not the only law firm tenant in the building as well. Cravath, Swaine & Moore signed on as anchor tenant at Two Manhattan West several years ago, planning to move in 2024. Clifford Chance also announced last year it was moving into the building beginning in 2024 from its current offices at 31 West 52nd St. "It is a very exciting neighborhood for a lot of reasons. We see clients that we know well that are in the vicinity. We see other law firms that are our peers in our building, in One Manhattan West, which has been open for a few years across Hudson Yards," said McGorty. "To be on the East side of Hudson Yards which is so close to the train station is so great for our folks coming from out of town as well as the very important line between our D.C. office and our New York office." Like most law firms, Crowell has adopted a hybrid work arrangement. In New York, lawyers are averaging around three days a week in office, according to McGorty. "We're trying to bring people back, but we're trying to bring people out of their offices and so the design very much mirrored that theory," said McGorty. McGorty added that the goal is to have the office feel "full and vibrant." The New York City office move comes as the firm has made other changes in light of recent headcount growth, adding more than 175 lawyers in the U.S., Europe, MENA and Asia since 2021, according to a firm release.
