Donald Trump is on trial in New York for crimes relating to covering up payments made to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal to silence them about alleged sexual encounters with them.

We really don’t have a clear statement of his defense yet and probably won’t until summations. Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, said in his opening that prosecutors were mischaracterizing Trump’s actions as illegal and dramatically concluded: “I have a spoiler alert: There’s nothing wrong with trying to influence the election. It’s called democracy.” The balance of his opening was reserved for a blistering attack on the alleged lack of credible testimony from Daniels and a convicted perjurer, Michael Cohen.
