On May 17, the New York Law Journal published a column by attorney Elliott Jacobson titled “Todd Blanche’s Faustian Bargain.” In it, Jacobson argues that Todd Blanche, Trump’s principal lawyer in his current trial in Manhattan, is guilty of an ethical lapse for representing Trump in the case. Specifically, he argues that Blanche, a private lawyer, had a choice about whether to take Trump’s case, and by agreeing to represent Trump, he made the wrong (i.e. ethically dubious) choice.

It’s wrong because if Blanche and his team can produce a good outcome—an acquittal or, close second, a hung jury—he would provide an invaluable assist in getting Trump reelected to a second term. Jacobson sees this as a nightmare scenario that must be avoided at any cost.
