Donald Trump was in attendance on Friday to oral arguments before a federal appeals court in which judges appeared to question the former president’s evidentiary basis for challenging a jury verdict against him in a defamation lawsuit brought by writer E. Jean Carroll.

Last year—following a two-week trial in the Southern District of New York in which Trump did not testify or attend—a jury handed up a $5 million verdict in favor of Carroll, who alleges that Trump sexually assaulted her in 1996 in Manhattan in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room.
