Criminal laws, no matter how well designed and enforced, cannot by themselves solve society’s most urgent and complex problems. Despite anti-gun laws, American society is awash in guns, typically military-style weapons most often used in mass shootings. Indeed, there are more guns in America than people. Despite laws regulating the use and storage of guns, gun violence increases by the day.

Every day, more than 120 persons are killed by guns. There have been 385 mass shootings in America so far in 2024. And tragically, although not surprisingly, despite an array of laws targeting violent crime, school shootings continue to escalate and school children, teachers, and staff continue to die. There have been 45 school shootings so far this year leaving 23 people dead. In all, there have been 205 school shootings since 2018.
