On February 27, 1933, the Reichstag, or German Parliament building, burned down. This was less than a month after Adolph Hitler took power as Germany's Fuhrer. Hitler and his Nazi Party used the fire as the impetus to spread the lie that the Communists were responsible for the fire and were planning a violent uprising to take over the government. He demanded emergency legislation to suppress the threat.
