With President-elect Donald Trump’s promised mass deportation campaign on the horizon, immigration advocates rallied in New York City on Tuesday in support of legislation that would create a state-wide right to counsel in deportation proceedings.

Advocates from the Vera Institute of Justice, the New York Immigration Coalition and Immigration ARC, as well as sponsoring lawmakers, pushed for the Access to Representation Act in Foley Square, saying that guaranteed legal representation—regardless of ability to pay—will ensure that immigrants receive due process at court, where they must present their case to stay in the U.S. in an adversarial hearing, against government attorneys.
