Prosecutors with the Manhattan DA's Office, citing the so-called "Alabama rule," said Acting Justice Juan Merchan could halt proceedings pre-sentencing, without dismissing the verdict or the indictment.

Manhattan prosecutors on Tuesday suggested the judge overseeing President-elect Donald Trump’s criminal case could adopt an unorthodox alternative to setting aside the jury’s guilty verdict – including a remedy similar to abatement-by-death.
While Trump’s defense team has asked Acting Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan to dismiss the case entirely, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said the judge could conclude the proceeding without vacating the verdict or dismissing the indictment.
