New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday vetoed a bill meant to enable state-paid judges' families to receive death benefits, citing the absence of a dedicated funding source.

The proposal, S7567A/A9143, had been starkly coined the “Death Gamble Bill,” because advocates said it spoke to how judges are forced to gamble that they can live long enough to retire—so that when they die, their families will be entitled to receive an adequate pension that they can receive monthly.
