A Nassau County judge was recently presented with a rare scenario: what do you do when a dismissed civil jury realizes that the wrong dollar amount was entered for its verdict in a medical malpractice case and demands a correction to the record.

State Supreme Court Justice Danielle Peterson was presented with just such a quandary last month following a trial in a lawsuit filed by a man against medical providers over angioplasty procedures that allegedly resulted in an above-the-knee amputation of his left leg. Following three weeks of trial, on Nov. 22 a jury unanimously found two doctors 80% at fault for plaintiff Yuri Shif’s injury, assigning 20% fault to the plaintiff.
