The Office of New York Attorney General Letitia James' release of body-worn camera footage on Friday showing correction officers beating a handcuffed 43-year-old Black inmate before he died has sparked a call to justice from legal advocates and others.

James, whose office is investigating the death of Robert L. Brooks, unveiled the footage to promote transparency and "strengthen public trust in these matters."

The footage showed Brooks being beaten, stomped and choked on Dec. 9 during an encounter with New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County.
