New York Attorney General Letitia James is targeting scams in which alleged bogus job offers were used to trick people out of millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency, according to a lawsuit filed in a state court.

James alleged that defendants lured unwitting victims through unsolicited text messages offering paid employment opportunities, deceiving them into purchasing tens of thousands of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies and depositing them into accounts secretly under the scammers’ control.

“There was no legitimate operation and Victims earned no actual compensation. Through their deceptive and unlawful practices, Defendants intentionally misled the Victims—including New Yorkers—into believing they had obtained legitimate and income-producing employment when, in reality, Defendants were simply stealing the Victims’ cryptocurrency,” according to the lawsuit. The case was filed Thursday, in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Queens.
