In my second year as chair of the LGBTQ+ Law Section, it was important for me and the executive committee to provide our members with quality CLE programming to enhance their understanding of issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community. Our section is dedicated to promoting and defending equality under the law for LGBTQ+ individuals, and our programming at this year’s annual meeting will explore hot-button topics impacting our community: 1) Advocating for Trans Youth, and 2) Protecting Artistic Expression.

Our section is committed to advocating for trans youth. In recent years, attacks on access to gender-affirming health care for trans youth and legislative efforts to limit their participation in sports have become widespread. One case has even found its way to the U.S. Supreme Court: United States v. Skrmetti. This case concerns the legal challenge to Tennessee’s Senate Bill 1, which prohibits all forms of gender-affirming care for minors, including puberty blockers, hormone therapies and surgical interventions. Our CLE on this topic will analyze the protections afforded under the Equal Protection Clause, explore the evolving legal landscape regarding transgender rights, and discuss factors impacting litigation concerning gender-affirming medical care.
