Almost 3,000 lawyers, judges and experts came together to discuss the top challenges facing the legal profession today—including artificial intelligence and data privacy—in Manhattan this week for the New York State Bar Association’s annual meeting.

At the marquee event for the week, the State Bar presented its Gold Medal–the bar association group’s highest honor–to retired United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

Breyer took the stage on Jan. 16 at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan for presentation of the medal and for a fireside chat with Thomas Susman, the American Bar Association’s strategic advisor for governmental affairs and global programs, for a wide ranging discussion that included Breyer’s upbringing in a public-service oriented family, his favorite movie and how his judicial philosophy clashes with that held by the current majority on the high court.
