Weil, Gotshal & Manges will defer start dates for some of its summer associates to 2012, according to a memo distributed Friday. Summer associates who receive employment offers this year will have the option of deferring their start dates from January 2011 to January 2012, the memo said. Incoming associates who decide to defer will receive a $75,000 stipend and health benefits. Associates who defer will be required to spend 1,000 hours during that year doing public service either in the United States or abroad.

The memo, which went to associates and counsel from the management committee, said Weil Gotshal is “performing well and our balanced platform has helped us remain strong, even in this challenging economy.” The firm cited “exceptionally low rate of associate attrition” and large class of junior associates for the deferrals. A spokeswoman said the firm had no comment beyond the memo.
