President Barack Obama intends to nominate Southern District Judge Denny Chin to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Senator Charles Schumer’s office confirmed yesterday. Judge Chin, 55, was nominated to the Southern District by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the Senate in 1994. Since then, the 1978 Fordham University School of Law graduate has handled a series of high-profile cases, most recently the decision to sentence Bernard Madoff to 150 years in prison for his multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme.

Judge Chin, who was born in Hong Kong, began his legal career as a clerk for Southern District Judge Henry Werker, spent two years in private practice and then worked as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District from 1982 to 1986. He then returned to private practice for another eight years before being elevated to the federal bench.
