By a vote of 94 to three, the U.S. Senate yesterday confirmed Southern District Judge Gerard E. Lynch for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Judge Lynch is the first nominee of President Barack Obama to win approval.

Judge Lynch, 58, has been a federal judge since 2000. His diverse background also includes time as a professor, a counsel at Covington & Burling, a federal prosecutor, and an associate independent counsel during the Iran/Contra investigation. Judge Lynch, a graduate of Columbia Law School, fills the vacancy created in 2008 when Judge Chester Straub took senior status.
