The chairman of a state Senate committee investigating possible sanctions against Hiram Monserrate, the senator convicted last week of assaulting his girlfriend, announced yesterday that the committee has retained Daniel R. Alonso of Kaye Scholer to serve as its special counsel. Mr. Alonso will assist the nine-member committee in examining “all relevant evidence and law to establish the proper procedures and ensure a fair investigation,” Senator Eric Schneiderman, D-Manhattan, chair of the committee, said in a statement.

At Kaye Scholer, Mr. Alonso specializes in internal investigations, white-collar defense, general civil litigation and SEC enforcement. He previously served as the chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. - Mark Fass
