Justice Sherry Klein Heitler (See Profile) yesterday was named administrative judge in charge of civil cases in Manhattan Supreme Court. The appointment is effective immediately. Justice Heitler, 65, was first elected to Manhattan Supreme Court in 2000, and was appointed to the Appellate Term, First Department, in 2007. She is also the administrator for all New York City asbestos-related cases. As an administrative judge, Justice Heitler’s salary will be increased to $141,500 from $136,700.

Justice Heitler succeeds Acting Justice Joan B. Carey (See Profile), who replaced Justice Jacqueline W. Silbermann after she retired at the end of 2008. Justice Carey, who was appointed in March, faces mandatory retirement on Dec. 31 after turning 70 earlier this year.
