The first Playboy Jazz Cruise, on the Holland America Westerdam, boasted a lineup that matched any jazz festival in the world. As jazz fans and frequent cruisers, we thought this seemed like an irresistible combination. Because our Caribbean cruise began and ended in Fort Lauderdale, a city we had never visited, we arrived a couple of days before the ship’s departure to check out the sights there.
After the movie, “Where the Boys Are,” came out in 1960, Fort Lauderdale was known as a college spring break capital. The city has since succeeded in changing its image to a family vacation center. Our base of operations was Hyatt Regency Pier 66 (2301 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33316; Tel: 954-525-6666; http://pier66.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels). This 17-story hotel, a short cab ride from the airport and the cruise terminal, is on a picturesque 22-acre property with a marina, spa, pool and five restaurants.
