Were law firm mergers up or down last year? Depends on whom you ask. Two recent reports reached different conclusions about U.S. merger trends in 2009.

Altman Weil’s year-end MergerLine report found that the number of law firm mergers dropped by 24 percent compared to 2008, down to 53. Conversely, Hildebrandt Baker Robbins (formerly Hildebrandt International) has concluded in its latest MergerWatch report that mergers were up slightly, to 57 in 2009 from 55 in 2008.
