Defense attorney Robert Simels must begin his 14-year prison sentence today following a federal appeals panel’s denial yesterday of his motion for bail pending appeal. Mr. Simels was convicted of 11 felonies in August related to his role in a plot to threaten and bribe witnesses in a drug case.

Eastern District Judge John Gleeson in December declined Mr. Simels’ motion for bail pending appeal, ordering him to report to prison today. Mr. Simels appealed the denial of bail, and a three-judge Second Circuit panel heard oral arguments on Tuesday. The panel issued the denial early yesterday afternoon, shortly before Mr. Simels was scheduled to fly to Texas. The Federal Bureau of Prisons denied his request to be assigned to the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, Orange County, instead assigning him to the Big Spring Correctional Institute, about 300 miles west of Dallas.
