A legal battle between Debevoise & Plimpton and a former client that has refused to pay a $6 million legal bill has put a spotlight on how law firms staff litigation and manage costs.

Debevoise sued former client Candlewood Timber Development LLC in November for the fee stemming from its work on a case more than three years ago against a BP affiliate. Candlewood filed counterclaims Wednesday in Manhattan Supreme Court, accusing Debevoise partners of failing to supervise a “baneful horde of time-billers” who ran up “exorbitant bills without regard to cost-effectiveness, strategic considerations, or the hope of conferring commensurate benefit on Candlewood.”
