There has been a change in the legal team representing accused embassy bomber Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani. Southern District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan issued a one-page order saying that Gregory E. Cooper has been relieved as counsel “at the request of the defendant.” Along with Peter E. Quijano of Quijano & Ennis and Michael K. Bachrach, Mr. Cooper has represented Mr. Ghailani since his transfer from the Guantánamo Bay detention facility to the civil justice system last year. Mr. Ghailani is preparing for trial for his role in the 1998 al Qaeda bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Claiming he was abused by the CIA in so-called “black site” prisons following his arrest in 2004, he is trying to have the charges against him dismissed on speedy trial grounds (NYLJ, Jan. 12). Mr. Cooper could not be reached for comment.

Circuit Says Protesters May Be Kept From Mayor’s Door

The New York Police Department’s decision to keep school-closings protesters away from the front door of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s 79th Street townhouse was upheld yesterday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Reversing Southern District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, the circuit said restricting demonstrators to the opposite side of the street did not violate their First Amendment rights. The protesters, calling themselves the Emergency Coalition to Stop School Closings, were set to begin demonstrating late yesterday in advance of next week’s vote by the Department of Education to close schools.
