Roger Corbin, a former Nassau County Democratic legislator, pleaded guilty yesterday to tax evasion charges in federal court in Central Islip. Mr. Corbin, 63, was arrested in May 2009 on charges he filed false tax returns and lied to federal agents about $226,000 he received from a developer on a $60 million federally funded project in New Cassel. Mr. Corbin, a legislator from 1995 until 2009, previously unsuccessfully sought to prevent Newsday and cable TV’s News 12 from running photos of him in handcuffs, arguing that the “perp walk” images would impair his right to a fair trial (NYLJ, June 1, 2009).
Yesterday, Mr. Corbin pleaded guilty to three counts of filing false tax returns, three counts of tax evasion, and a charge of lying to federal agents. He faces a maximum of 31 years behind bars. In a statement, his lawyer, Thomas F. Liotti, said the charges were “all personal and had nothing to do with any alleged abuse of his office.” A sentencing date has not been set. — Vesselin Mitev
