The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct has recommended that a Rensselaer County judge who made improper campaign promises to “fellow pistol permit holders” be admonished. In October 2008, Supreme Court Justice Patrick J. McGrath (See Profile) sent a letter to some 7,000 individuals or addresses provided by the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, according to the commission. On “Judge McGrath for Supreme Court” letterhead, he told would-be voters, “My pistol permit is very important to me as I know yours is to you.”
The letter said the judge worked “closely” with the pistol permit clerk to ensure that permits were handled in a timely fashion and claimed that as a Supreme Court justice he would continue to “be responsible for all pistol permits in Rensselaer County.” The judge ended the letter by asking voters for their support and telling them he looked “forward to serving the Pistol Permit holders for another 14 years.”
