The Southern District yesterday changed its policy on the use of cell phones and computers by attorneys in Manhattan’s Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse. With some limitations, attorneys with the appropriate identification now will be able to bring in cell phones, BlackBerries and notebook computers beginning April 1.

Chief Judge Loretta A. Preska signed the order yesterday changing the old policy that required attorneys with cell phones to obtain written permission from the presiding judge. The change was made after three judges’ committees studied security concerns and questions of decorum and heard from members of the bar. “This is in response to hearings last summer when attorneys talked about their need to have access to these devices and ease the burden on their practices,” said Judge Paul A. Crotty.
