A 2003 Suffolk County law that limits the number of people who can live in a group home for recovering addicts improperly discriminates against those seeking treatment, a federal judge has ruled.

The statute in question, S.C.C. §450, was enacted in 2003 after an influx into communities of addicts seeking treatment prompted complaints about poor conditions and “profiteering by landlords” in so-called “sober homes.”
