Law firms in New York reduced the number of summer associate offers to students by nearly half last year as the economy forced them to reconsider their hiring needs, according to a report released yesterday by the National Association for Law Placement.

The report found that firms in New York extended a median of 29 offers last year, down 44 percent from the fall 2008 recruiting season. Summer associate offers dropped nationally to the lowest point since 1993, when NALP began collecting statistics.
