The Manhattan Criminal Court building at 100 Centre St. remains closed today and could stay shut tomorrow as a result of a two-alarm fire Tuesday morning. The blaze temporarily damaged the building’s electrical system, said Ronald Younkins, chief of operations for the Office of Court Administration. The fire was caused by faulty wiring in a construction area in the basement, according to the New York City Fire Department.
Even though the building had electricity yesterday, Mr. Younkins said before it can reopen, there are a number of other issues that must be addressed by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, which manages the building. An odor continues to permeate the building and some ceilings that firefighters tore into must be repaired, Mr. Younkins said. He added that the city would assess today whether any operations could resume tomorrow at 100 Centre St. In the meantime, a number of emergency measures have been put in place.
