Kathleen Sullivan, a prominent New York appellate lawyer, has become a name partner at the firm previously known as Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges. A spokesman for the firm, now called Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, said the firm believes Ms. Sullivan would be the first female name partner in the AmLaw 100. Ms. Sullivan joined Quinn Emanuel in 2005 after five years as dean of Stanford Law School. Before that, she was a professor at Harvard Law School.

Ms. Sullivan moved to New York in 2007. Her name was widely circulated as a potential nominee to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter. The suggestion won support among some gay rights advocates who hoped Ms. Sullivan would become the first openly gay justice on the high court.
