Springtime is the time of year when law firm partners often take flight and “spring” for a new home. Of course, it’s not merely the nice weather that urges these reluctant creatures to change venue. No, their seasonal migration is also at least partially induced by the appearance of another force of nature: the payment of bonuses. Yes, it is many the wise law firm partner who, prior to giving notice, collects a bonus before joining the flock of former partners setting their bearings for hopefully sunnier skies.

In this column, we discuss and review the strategies, rights, and duties of law firm partners who seek to depart and retain their bonus distributions as well as the duties implicated by some law firm practices concerning payments owing to former partners.
