A family Court referee has awarded a Roma couple guardianship of a five-year-old boy who was sold by his Mexican birth mother and smuggled into the United States as part of an adoption scam.

Last week, Referee Carol Joan Goldstein concluded that Jimmy Blue M. and Danielle Rebecca M. were unaware that Danielle’s mother, Elizabeth G., had paid a baby broker roughly $20,000 for the child.
