After 14 years at the helm of Dechert, where he dramatically drove up profits by driving out less profitable practices and focusing on higher-end work, Barton J. Winokur will step down as the firm’s chairman and chief executive officer next year, the firm has confirmed. And there will be two people to fill his shoes. For the first time in the firm’s history, leadership will be—at least in part—outside of Philadelphia.
During a transition period that is expected to conclude in the middle of 2011, Philadelphia-based partner G. Daniel O’Donnell, 59, will serve as vice chairman and chief executive officer-elect while New York-based partner Andrew J. Levander, 56, will serve as chairman-elect. The two will work closely with Mr. Winokur, 70, during the transition, at the end of which Mr. Levander will become chairman and Mr. O’Donnell will be CEO. Mr. Winokur will remain on at the firm as a full-time partner following the transition.
