I am sometimes asked if I get nervous running a board meeting, asking an important client a difficult question or disagreeing with a more senior partner. My response is, not really. I have been practicing law now for almost 20 years, but then I stop to think about what really got me over my nervousness. The answer that comes immediately to mind is the pro bono work I have done, particularly the year I spent assisting low income individuals living with HIV, as a staff attorney for a legal services organization.

Pro bono work can be both personally rewarding and an excellent training tool. My strongly held view is that you can leverage the training aspect of pro bono work in a myriad of ways, many of which are not obvious.
