Cablevision Systems, the nation’s fifth-largest cable TV operator, has agreed to acquire western U.S. telecommunications provider Bresnan Communications for $1.37 billion, a deal that will expand the Bethpage-based company beyond the New York City metro area.

The transaction will give Cablevision access to more than 320,000 customers in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah, markets that are particularly attractive because they offer substantially less competition from major rivals like Verizon Communications. Cablevision has attained over 90 percent penetration for its digital cable services in the New York region.
