William M. Treanor, the longtime dean of Fordham University School of Law, will become the next top administrator of Georgetown University Law Center, the Washington, D.C., school announced yesterday. Mr. Treanor, who will become executive vice president and dean at Georgetown on Aug. 16, will replace interim dean Judith Areen, who stepped in after former dean T. Alexander Aleinikoff left in January to become the United Nations deputy high commissioner for refugees.

“I think this is a very important time in legal education,” Mr. Treanor said. “There is the possibility of real change, and Georgetown has always been on the cutting edge of rethinking legal education. The opportunity to be at Georgetown at this moment is incredibly exciting.” Mr. Treanor has been dean at Fordham since 2002 and joined its faculty in 1991. During his deanship, he emphasized fundraising, recently wrapping up a six-year campaign that raised $100 million for scholarships, faculty positions, academic programs and other initiatives. Clinical seats for students increased by 50 percent during his tenure and the latest graduating class performed 125,000 hours of public service during law school, he said. Mr. Treanor boosted the global focus at Fordham by adding more study-abroad programs and launching an international human rights program. – Karen Sloan
