Paul Shechtman, a partner with litigation boutique Stillman, Friedman & Shechtman, has been named one of two private lawyers on the federal Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Rules of Evidence. The appointment, made by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., is for a three-year term on the 12-member committee. The committee has eight federal judges, one Department of Justice lawyer, one academic, and two private practitioners. Mr. Shechtman is a former chief of the Southern District U.S. Attorney’s Office criminal division and a former chair of the State Ethics Commission. He also served as the New York director of criminal justice under Governor George E. Pataki. – Nate Raymond
Judge Issues Split Ruling on Cigarette Regulations
Seneca Indians in the mail-order cigarette business will have to comply with some, but not all, provisions of a new federal law while they fight to have it struck down in court. A federal judge in Buffalo issued a mixed decision on Friday in response to a request by more than 140 Seneca-owned businesses to be exempt from the recently enacted Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act while they challenge the federal law’s constitutionality.
