The assault trial of three-term State Senator Kevin S. Parker came to an unexpected halt yesterday when the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office disclosed that the son of Mr. Parker’s longtime political rival is an assistant district attorney in the same bureau that is prosecuting the case. Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil J. Firetog (See Profile) granted the district attorney’s office request to appoint two special prosecutors, one to prosecute the case against Mr. Parker, who has been charged with attacking a New York Post photographer in May 2009, and the other to investigate potential wrongdoing by Assistant District Attorney Wynton Sharpe, whose father, Wellington Sharpe, is challenging Mr. Parker in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.

An office spokesman said the junior Mr. Sharpe has been suspended without pay pending an investigation into his failure to disclose his father’s rivalry with Mr. Parker. The New York Times reported that Mr. Parker and the senior Mr. Sharpe’s rivalry extends far beyond the primary, which will mark Mr. Sharpe’s second attempt to unseat Mr. Parker. The two men have been adversaries in at least three lawsuits.
