Eastern District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis has given New York City five options for hiring firefighters on an interim basis, and four days to make a decision. The interim procedure will allow the city to hire two classes of 312 firefighters while a discrimination action filed on behalf of minority applicants is resolved.

In July 2009 and January 2010, the judge found that the city’s use of two written examinations between 1999 and 2007 discriminated against black and Latino applicants. Among other remedies, the judge ordered the city to develop a new, non-discriminatory hiring process.
