The trial of accused U.S. embassy bomber Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani is moving swiftly. Lead prosecutor Michael Farbiarz told Southern District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan yesterday that the government’s case is “racing” to a conclusion and could be completed next week, as his team plans to drop several proposed witnesses from its case.
Given that the trial, which was expected to last as long as four months, might be completed within three weeks, defense attorney Peter Quijano asked the judge whether both sides might be given a couple of extra days to prepare for closings. Judge Kaplan asked whether the question implied that the defense team believed Mr. Ghailani would not testify in his own behalf to rebut accusations he was part of an al-Qaida conspiracy to bomb embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 that killed 224 people and injured hundreds. Mr. Quijano said that was a fair assumption. – Mark Hamblett
