The average number of lawyers working as staff attorneys, counsel or of counsel at the nation’s largest law firms made a considerable jump this year, underscoring the staffing flexibility that these kinds of lawyers provide. This year, NLJ 250 firms employed an average of 49 “other” attorneys, compared with 46 in 2009, representing a 6.5 percent gain. The results are from The National Law Journal’s annual ranking of the nation’s largest 250 law firms.

The NLJ 250 defines “other” attorneys as non-partner and non-associate lawyers. They do not include temporary or contract attorneys. The headcounts for all attorneys working at NLJ 250 firms declined by 1.1 percent in 2010.
