Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton said on Friday it had hired a former senior regional counsel from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Jeffrey T. Kern, who joins the firm as special counsel in the New York white-collar practice, had been in FINRA’s department of enforcement. Before that, he was senior trial counsel in the New York Stock Exchange’s enforcement division from 2000 to 2002.

White-collar lawyers are in demand in anticipation of increased enforcement activity following the passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Mr. Kern’s hiring follows the addition of Kevin Puvalowski, the former deputy special inspector general for the Troubled Relief Asset Program, as a partner in Sheppard Mullin’s New York office. Guy Halgren, chairman of the firm, said at the time that Mr. Puvalowski’s expertise “adds significantly to our financial institution and white-collar defense capabilities not only in New York but also firmwide.” – Nate Raymond
