Last Wednesday, the U.S. Senate found Judge G. Thomas Porteous Jr. of the Eastern District of Louisiana guilty on four articles of impeachment. With the unanimous 96 to 0 vote, he became just the eighth federal judge in history to be removed by impeachment. Judge Porteous, who sat in New Orleans, was charged with taking money from attorneys and bail bondsmen with business before him; lying in his personal bankruptcy filing; and concealing his corruption in statements to the Senate during his 1994 confirmation hearing.

Seyfarth Shaw white-collar defense litigator Alan Baron served as special impeachment counsel to the House of Representatives in the investigation. (The House impeached Judge Porteous in March.) Mr. Baron’s also worked on three prior judicial impeachment proceedings. In fact, of the eight judicial convictions in U.S. history, he has handled three for the House.
