A crack defendant who turned his life around and helped the government solve several crimes in the three years following his arrest will get a chance at a lower sentence following a decision by a federal appeals panel.

A divided U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, impressed with the rehabilitation of Jamar Preacely, said a lower court may not have realized the extent to which it could depart from a sentencing guidelines range when confronted with a career offender.
