An inmate whose mother discovered evidence of prosecutorial error has won a new trial after serving 18 years in prison for a 1992 slaying in Westchester County.

In vacating a guilty verdict for manslaughter and weapons possession, Westchester County Court Judge Susan M. Capeci ruled that prosecutors did not fully inform Louis Hairston’s defense counsel that a witness told police a friend of the shooting victim, Andre Frank, had picked up a gun near Mr. Frank, thus lending credence to Mr. Hairston’s argument that the shooting might have been justified.
