The New York State Bar Association’s leading priority for the 2011 legislative session is proper funding for legal assistance to the indigent, both in civil and criminal cases. “Whether it is advocating for effective counsel for indigent New Yorkers or seeking equal legal rights for all citizens, we are committed to enhancing citizens’ trust and confidence in our justice system and government institutions,” President Stephen P. Younger said this week in releasing the group’s legislative hopes for 2011.

Other priorities for the state bar include pushing for a bill establishing same-sex marriage, a review of the criminal justice system to combat wrongful convictions and urging ethics-in-government reforms by the state Legislature and Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. Mr. Cuomo said in his State of the State address earlier this month that he would sign a same-sex marriage bill if sent to him by lawmakers. A state bar task force on government reform will report during the organization’s annual meeting later this month on reforms it favors. — Joel Stashenko
