Under Mr. Campbell, the Eastern District office attracted a range of major cases. He was widely considered as principled and sincere, a low-key, hands-on administrator who was willing and able to engage in difficult issues. At the same time, he brought a low-profile to the job. “I prefer to toil in anonymity and then announce victory,” Mr. Campbell told the Law Journal last year (NYLJ, March, 18, 2010).

Mr. Campbell said that his decision to join 2,000-attorney Latham was influenced by the presence there of several former Justice Department colleagues. The diversity of Latham’s integrated practices and the firm’s global reach also were big draws, he said. “The world has really changed a lot over the past 20 years, and while global integration is a bit of a buzzword, it’s also true,” he added. “And there’s not a lot of rigidity between folks in one area or another, which kind of mirrors my experience at the [Justice] department.”
