Australia’s leading law firms are bracing themselves for damage and disruption as the mass floods that have swept across Queensland spread towards Brisbane–the country’s third-largest city and a key hub for its booming mining and resources sector. Mayor Campbell Newman said in a press conference on Tuesday that as many as 6,500 homes, businesses, and properties would be flooded by Thursday as continued heavy rainfall caused the Brisbane River to burst its banks.
“It’s like a war zone,” said Norton Rose Australia managing partner Don Boyd, who has been stranded at his farm north of Brisbane since Friday. “The floods have decimated Queensland. It literally hasn’t stopped raining for weeks.”
