Southern District Judge Harold Baer is serious when he talks about diversity at law firms.

Last September, Judge Baer caused a stir in the securities class action bar when he directed Labaton Sucharow and Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, lead counsel in a class action against Gildan Activewear, to “make every effort” to staff the case with at least one woman and one minority. The Gildan ruling was the third time Judge Baer had used a judicial order to address his view that law firms are “behind where they should be” when it comes to diversity (NYLJ, Oct. 28, 2010).
